Gear:
Bike - 2011 Trek Speed Concept 9.9 w/ETAP, 54/42 Q-Ring Chain Ring, 172.5mm Red Crank, Vector 2 Pedals, 11-28 SRAM Cassette.
Shoes – Brooks Pureflow 5
Suit – 3V LG Pro Tri Top and Bottom
Race Type: C
Race Goals: Recovery race 2 weeks after IM Texas to see how recovery was going and test the legs at a shorter, faster race.
Weather: Weather was cool, in the 60’s early in the morning but warming during the race that began at 0800. Winds were moderate from the north.
Course Description:
Swim: 200yd pool swim, time trial start at a 10s interval, snake down pool changing lanes with each length of the pool
Bike: 12.1 mile course with two moderate climbs. Relatively technical in an urban area on a military installation with turns in relatively quick succession and on the descents.
Run: Flat course on a paved jogging path
Pre-Race Events/Schedule: Went out the night before to a college reunion and did not get to bed until about 0100 on race morning. Set the alarm for 0500 to wake up, eat, and get to the race site to help coordinate execution and movement of the volunteers by 0540.
Race Plan:
Swim: Swim fast, goal time of 3:00 plus the time to get out of the pool and to the mat
Bike: Attempt to maintain some stability in power output with the hills, but more concerned with pushing as hard as I safely could with an IF above 1.0 and see what was left for the run.
Run: sub 21:00
Nutrition: Had one bottle of rocket fuel mixed into the BTA carrier on the bike and sipped off the excess prior to race start. Snack on marshmallows after a breakfast of granola, yogurt, and fruit 3 hours prior to start.
Race Day Execution:
Warm-Up/Pre-Race: Biked to the venue (1.4 miles) Got in a 100 yd warm-up swim, but was otherwise occupied doing final setup and assisting in race execution.
Swim: Dorked up one of the flip turns, costing about 5 seconds right there, and doing the turns under the lane lines slowed me down more than expected.
T1: smooth with no isssues
Bike: executed race plan and went out hard to see what the legs had. Some of the VI increase was due to the descents having turns/loose gravel that prohibited a safe power on descent. Kept it under control and didn’t wreck. Had a max speed of 41.3 mph coming down by the old stables/kennel!

T2: quick and clean dismount with the shoes on the bike. Had a little bit of an issue racking the bike as the bar was too low for the handle bars to go under without tilting the bike to the side:
Run: The run went well. I gradually eased into a sub 7:00 pace, regaining my running legs and was able to maintain a steady effort throughout the run. I was able to pick it up the last mile aided by a fairly long slight down hill from 2.0-2.5, and then maintain that effort into the last hill up Cody road and into and around the parking lot. Finished the run feeling good, like I was cruising and could have kept going, exactly what I was looking for out of the run.

Overall thoughts: This is a great tune up race at the beginning of the season or an entry race for those new to the sport. That does come with the caveat that the bike course is a bit technical with numerous turns and opportunities for crashes with turns during or at the bottom of steep descents. Run course is flat and fast, could not be better.
