- Triple Victor AccoladesSeptember into October was a busy time for 3V. We laid it out across the country in triathlons, MTB races, and road races and earned national awards while we were at it. Zu Rivera raced IM CHOO in Tennessee on September 24th. She finished the course in 15:08:4915:08:49 overall with a 1:11 swim, a 7:34 bike, and a 5:59 run. This was the first ultra distannce tri in a long time and a great return to the distance. Jeff Welling completed his first triathlon, the Lake Lanier Islands Sprint Triathlon near Gainesville, GA on September 24th. He finished in 1:31:40, good for 22nd in his age group. He then had MTB races on the 30th, 14th, and 28th, part of the Chain Buster SEC Series. Big Ring Challenge on the 30th, Competing in the M30-39 AG, Jeff was 4th completing 2 laps in 2:11:13; on the 14th in the Chewacla Challenge he was third, completing 2 laps in 2:14:45. Combined with races earlier in the year, he earned third place honors for the race series for the 2017 season. Great Job Jeff! Justin Kline took on a race most can't even fathom, a 56 mile running only trail event on 22 October on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. He finished 4th overall in 12:24:05, gaining 12,487 ft of elevation. Amazing work, Justin! Noah Sandler started the month off for the team at the Twin Cities Marathon in Minnesota, posting a 3:42:24. Noah was 69th in his age group (top 20%) and top 25% of all finishers. Jeff Krebs raced the San Diego Mission Bay Sprint Triathlon on October 1st as part of a relay. His team placed 1st and he posted the fastest relay run time of the day at 21:07. The next weekend on October 8th, Jeff BQ'd and had a PB at the Chicago Marathon, completing the course in 3:24:29. Brendon Terry represented as part of the Ft. Leavenworth Team at the Army 10 Miler in Washington, D.C. It was a relatively hot day, so his 1:06:35 was not the desired result, but he was 3/10 men on the team and the men's team finished 14/26 teams overall. On a whim two weeks later, he signed up and raced the Kansas City Marathon on 21 October, finishing 7th in his age group with a 3:10:45. Also on 21 October, Gee Garner rocked an old favorite, the race formerly known as Beach to Battleship, IMNC 70.3. He finished in 5:14:15 and 27th in his age group. On the 22nd of October, Coach Dave was weathered out at IMNOLA 70.3, but Lydia Thomas raced the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., cruising to a 4:57:23 in east coast weather that still hasn't cooled down. On the 28th, Brandon Goodermont raced the Trick or Tri Triathlon with his son, which was his son's first triathlon. Brandon did awesome, finishing in 2:00:36 and 3rd in his age group. Congrats on the podium! Jessica Pekari battled near freezing temperatures at IM 70.3 Austin on the 29th of October, finishing 12th in her AG with a 5:49. She was in the top 20% of ladies overall and in the top third of all racers that day. Jessica had already qualified for IM 70.3 Worlds in Mandela Bay; this outing certainly showed her worth of that honor again. Also noteworthy, capping off all the excellence this month, Dave Mudek was selected by USA Triathlon as the Military Sport Award winner of the year for 2016. Dave was selected for his overall contribution to the sport as an athlete, coach, and volunteer to further the sport and the community.
